Scott McMahon: Philippines

A Seattle news outlet broke the story of Seattle Man, Scott McMahon wrongfully imprisoned in the the Philippines.  Scott has been imprisoned without trial for three and a half years as a victim of a retaliation and extortion attempt, despite multiple witnesses who place him 10 hours away at the time of the alleged crime.

McMahon’s case typifies a retaliation coordinated with local authorities in a foreign country.  Allegations of assault have thrown McMahon into a tumultuous legal battle.  He has been arrested twice, and currently remains in custody awaiting trial.  Common of show trials, this case involves a lack of clarity around charges and legal processes.  It has also garnered media attention.  Television crews were present and filming when Scott was confronted by police on the street, served a subpoena, and arrested on the spot.

Evidence shows that Scott is innocent of the charges brought against him, but there has been no attempt to speed up the legal process to exonerate him. Though he has not yet been tried, the lack of involvement from the US government has forced his family to take his case public in the hope of attaining his freedom.
